The School's general postgraduate funding leaflet
provides an overview of Institute, School and external funding sources for its Master's and research degree programmes.
Arts and Humanities Research Council Studentships
The School has been awarded a number of studentships for both Master's and research (or doctoral) degrees under the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Scheme. Eligible subject areas for students commencing in October 2010 are as follows:
- 2 x AHRC Research studentships in History (2)
- 2 x Master's degree studentships in History (RPM)
- 1 x Master's degree studentship in Law (Human Rights) (PPM)
- 1 x Collaborative Doctoral award at the IHR’s Centre for Contemporary British History with the Rothschild Archive. Only students offered a place at the Centre for Contemporary British History and commencing their first year of doctoral study are eligible to apply for this award. History can be interpreted in its broadest sense and studentships are not limited to programmes of study offered by the Institute of Historical Research
(except in the case of the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award). The Master's studentship in Law (Human Rights) is only available at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies
(MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights)
Value and eligibility criteria
AHRC scholarships cover fees and maintenance allowance. A full studentship is offered to those meeting UK residency criteria. EU nationals resident in the EU/EEA are eligible for a fees-only studentship. Overseas students are not normally eligible for AHRC funding.

School of Advanced Study Studentships
The School offers studentships for both Master's and research degree study (MPhil/PhD). In 2010-11 we expect to offer:
- 2 x Master's degree studentships
- 1 x research degree studentship
Value and eligibility criteria
School studentships cover fees and maintenance allowance at the full UK Research Council rate for London-based students. Studentships can be awarded to Home/EU or Overseas students and can be for full-time or part-time study. Only those students about to start their first year of study are eligible.

Access to Learning Fund
The Access to Learning Fund (ALF) provides assistance to home students experiencing unexpected financial hardship. Registered home students can apply for help from the Fund at any time during the academic year, the forms and guidelines are available from Institutes and the Registry.
University of London Central Research Funds
University of London Central Research Fund Grants are available to assist specific projects of research with the provision of expenses such as special materials, apparatus and travel costs. Detailed information on eligibility for the awards and the 2009/10 application deadlines are available from the University of London Central Research Funds webpage
External Funding Sources
Professional and Career Development Loan (formerly Career Development Loan)
This is a deferred repayment bank loan to help UK students pay for vocational education or training. You can borrow between £300 and £8,000 to cover 80% of your course costs and expenses. The bank will approve a loan based on credit-testing. The School’s Learning Provider Number is: 2901.
British Chevening Scholarships
These awards are to enable Overseas and EU students to study in the United Kingdom. To apply for a scholarship, you will need to contact the British Embassy or High Commission or the British Council in the country of which you are a citizen. The scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries. Details and the list of eligible countries are on the website. These scholarships are mainly awarded to Master’s students.
Federal Stafford Loans
Federal Stafford loans are operated by the US Government to assist US citizens with the costs of studying.
Funding for Spanish Master's Students
For the third consecutive year, the Spanish government is offering interest-free loans to Spanish students studying Master's degrees in Spain, the European Higher Education Area, the US or Canada. The maximum study period is 21 months and the maximum loan per student, including an overseas allowance, is EUR 22,800. The loans, which are interest-free, have to be repaid over a 20-year period once the student's income exceeds a certain threshold. Further information (in Spanish)
NZ-UK Link Foundation Discretionery Awards
Citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand may apply for a Link Discretionery Award to continue their educational/vocational training in the UK. Applicants must demonstrate the reciprocal benefit of their proposed project to both countries - and be in a position, on completion of the Award, to communicate his/her experiences to interested groups. Applications will be assessed by the Management Committee and applicants advised shortly afterwards. Application deadline: 31 July each year.
